Sowing and Reaping

“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bearing his sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:5-6)

The Bible frequently uses agricultural scenes to express a spiritual truth. More than once the picture of sowing and reaping is used. This is one of those scenes of sowing and reaping.

The seed, whether it is grass seed, wheat, rye or corn seed will not germinate and bring forth fruit unless it is sown in the ground. There will be no harvest from seed remaining in the barn.

The precious seed in these verses is the Bible, God’s holy word. He makes the promise that when the precious seed is sown there will be a harvest of sheaves, the souls of men.

That promise is to those who passionately sow the seed. As the familiar old song says, “We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.”
