Pray Like Jabez

“And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” (I Chronicles, 4:9-10)

If one walks with the Lord and talks with the Lord he can overcome anything, even a name which means “sorrowful” which is what the name “Jabez” means.

Allow me to point out seven truths from this prayer.
  • First, as Jabez did, we must recognize our dependence on God.
  • Second, we, like Jabez, must take time to pray.
  • Third, we can come boldly to the throne of grace as did Jabez. (Hebrews 4:16)
  • Fourth, we must be specific when we pray. His prayer had only thirty-three words.
  • Fifth, Jabez’s prayer was answered. Expect an answer when you pray.
  • Sixth, this prayer reminds us that even the “unknowns” and the “nobodies” can pray. Jabez is mentioned nowhere else in the Bible.
  • Seventh, a life of sorrow can be changed through prayer.
