When People Expect Bread

“Or what man is there of you, when if his son asks bread, will he give him a stone?” (Matthew 7:9)

Jesus is declaring how our prayers are answered according to our request and God’s generous love. God doesn’t mock our earnest prayers. Jesus declared Himself to be the Bread of Life. He is the only Bread that satisfies when we hunger and thirst after righteousness.

Following His resurrection Jesus told Simon to, “Feed my sheep.” He, nor any other pastor of a flock of the Lord’s sheep, is to give, “stones” rather than the “Bread of Life,” to the spiritually hungry.

When people gather before the preacher in the house of God they expect the Bread of Life to be presented. Jesus is the only one who can forgive the lost sinner and save his doomed soul. Jesus is the only one who can nourish and comfort the saint traveling the road of life with all its difficulties.

Preacher, pastor, evangelist, don’t be guilty of substituting stones for bread when you go to the sacred desk or when you are visiting the unsaved, the sick, the shut-ins, the hurting and the elderly. A stone that looks like bread is still a stone.
