Cain and Abel

“This is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.” (I John 3:11-12)

Two young men, born to the same parents, reared in the same home and taught the same things turn out differently. What was the difference in their offerings? We are told that Cain was of that wicked one. Cain brought of the fruit of the ground; Abel brought of the firstlings of the flock. Abel’s offering was a blood offering looking toward Calvary and the shedding of the blood of the Lamb of God. Abel’s offering was offered by faith according to Hebrews 11:4

Nothing is said of Cain’s faith or of the blood. The Bible says that, “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.” (Hebrews 9:22)

In our text the Bible says the reason Cain killed Abel, his brother, was because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. Cain was jealous of Abel because God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected his.
