"For scarcely for a
righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even
dare to die. But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:7-8)
Someone might offer his life in
behalf of another, as in the case of a young, strong, professional football
player with two healthy kidneys offering one of them to his brother with a
serious kidney disease that would soon take his life unless a proper donor came
forward very soon. The brother was a perfect match. In an interview the donor
brother said that he would give the kidney even if it meant his own death.
However, most of us would not
give our body or any portion of it to save a murderer, a rapist, a thief or
other vicious sinner. But, that is what God did when He gave His one and only
Son to die as a sacrifice for us. He did not wait until we got better, improved
or "got some things worked out," before He sent Jesus to the cross.
One of the strongest statements in the
Bible on the love of God is
this one that says, "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
